Microsoft has announced a major Microsoft Copilot 2026 update, introducing a new Copilot experience designed to bring AI more deeply into everyday work across Microsoft 365.

The announcement introduces three major capabilities, Copilot Home, Copilot Code and Autopilot, alongside deeper integration with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams and organizational data.

Together, these changes point toward an important evolution in Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Copilot is moving beyond an AI assistant that waits for a question. Microsoft is building toward an AI-powered work environment where employees can ask, create, delegate, build and automate work within the Microsoft ecosystem.

For organizations already using Microsoft 365, or evaluating Microsoft Copilot for business, understanding these changes can help them prepare for what comes next.

What Is New in Microsoft Copilot in 2026?

Microsoft’s latest Copilot announcement brings several new and expanded capabilities together.

The three major additions are:

  • Home: a new starting point that brings Chat and Cowork together.
  • Code: a way to create apps, dashboards, trackers, automations and other solutions using natural language.
  • Autopilot: a proactive, persistent AI agent designed to continue working toward an objective without requiring a new prompt for every step.

Microsoft is also bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into Copilot, expanding Copilot’s business context, introducing new AI cost-management capabilities and making Copilot more proactive within Microsoft Teams.

The result is a broader vision for AI at work, one where Copilot can help employees not only find information and create content, but increasingly delegate, automate and complete work.

Copilot Home: A New Starting Point for AI-Powered Work

Microsoft Copilot Home is designed to become the new starting point for working with Copilot.

Home brings Chat and Cowork together in one experience.

Office in Copilot: Word, Excel and PowerPoint Come Into the Copilot Experience

Another important part of the new Microsoft Copilot is deeper integration with Microsoft Office applications.

With Office in Copilot, Microsoft is bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into the Copilot experience.

Users can ask Copilot to create or update real Microsoft 365 files without repeatedly moving between separate applications.

  • Draft a launch brief in Word
  • Build or update a budget in Excel
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation
  • Continue working on an existing team document
  • Collaborate with colleagues on editable Microsoft 365 files

Microsoft says these documents, workbooks and presentations remain real, editable files that teams can continue working on collaboratively.

The company is also expanding Copilot capabilities inside the Office apps themselves. Microsoft highlighted improvements including on-brand PowerPoint creation, visibility into Copilot changes in Excel, chart recommendations and specialized Skills that can bring role-specific expertise into Microsoft 365 applications.

For businesses, this can reduce the gap between using AI to generate an answer and using AI to complete actual work.

Copilot Code: Build Business Apps and Workflows With Natural Language

Copilot Code introduces another significant capability.

Microsoft is extending solution-building beyond professional developers by allowing people to describe what they need using natural language.

According to Microsoft, that could include:

  • Internal applications
  • Dashboards
  • Trackers
  • Automations
  • Workflows
  • Desktop widgets
  • Other purpose-built business solutions

Copilot can then select an approach and build the solution.

Code is powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and runs within a sandboxed environment.

Microsoft says solutions can also be hosted securely within an organization’s tenant. Microsoft has additionally introduced Copilot Managed Runtime, which provides hosting infrastructure for code to run within the organization’s Microsoft 365 environment while remaining governed by IT.

This could have important implications for organizations where departments frequently need smaller applications or workflow solutions.

Instead of every requirement becoming a traditional software development project, employees may increasingly be able to build purpose-specific tools with AI while IT maintains appropriate governance.

Microsoft says Code is rolling out through its Frontier program, with broader availability planned subsequently. It is also expected to enter preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later in 2026.

Microsoft Copilot Autopilot: A Proactive AI Agent for Work

Perhaps one of the most significant announcements is Microsoft Copilot Autopilot, previously called Scout.

Traditional AI assistants generally wait for someone to initiate an interaction.

Autopilot is designed differently.

Microsoft describes Autopilot as a persistent, proactive and personal agent that can continue working after receiving an objective.

Users can give an Autopilot a name, role and goal, and the agent can continue working toward that objective.

According to Microsoft, Autopilot can perform activities such as:

  • Monitoring channels
  • Following up on conversations
  • Running recurring work
  • Returning to a project days later
  • Preparing meetings
  • Managing follow-ups
  • Requesting updates from stakeholders
  • Helping coordinate multi-step business processes

Microsoft gives the example of a supplier review process where Autopilot could create the schedule and workback plan, prepare for meetings, manage follow-ups and reach out to stakeholders for updates.

Because Autopilot is cloud-hosted, it can continue working while the person who assigned the task is focused elsewhere.

Microsoft says Autopilot operates within the organization’s tenant and has its own identity, memory, computer and workspace. It is also designed to operate with permissions, auditing and governance controls.

This is an important consideration for businesses.

As AI agents become more autonomous, organizations need to think not only about what AI can do, but also about what it should be allowed to do, which information it can access and how its actions will be governed.

Autopilot is expanding to private preview at the end of September 2026.

Watch: The New Microsoft Copilot in Action

Microsoft has also released an official video demonstrating how the new Copilot experience brings these capabilities together.

The video provides a useful visual introduction to Microsoft’s vision for AI-powered work and the evolving Copilot experience.

Microsoft Copilot in Teams: More Context and Proactive AI

The update also expands how Microsoft Copilot works in Teams. With @Copilot in Teams,

Copilot can use the shared context and permissions of a channel, group chat or meeting.

For example, instead of searching manually through conversations to understand why a decision was made, a team could ask Copilot to find the relevant context.

Microsoft says Copilot can then go further by helping teams understand dependencies, owners, open questions and decisions surrounding a project.

The @Copilot capability is expected to enter private preview in Teams by the end of September 2026.

Microsoft is also previewing another experience called Today.

Today is designed as a proactive, personalized command center spanning email, calendar, Teams conversations, meetings and tasks.

Rather than simply displaying information,
Microsoft says Today can help prepare the next action. A draft could already be prepared for review, a scheduling change could be proposed, or a forgotten follow-up could be surfaced with the relevant context.

Today is scheduled to enter private preview in Copilot in October 2026, with Microsoft also planning to bring the experience to Outlook and Teams.

Together, Today, @Copilot and Autopilot demonstrate Microsoft’s broader movement toward proactive AI within Microsoft 365.

Microsoft IQ and Business Context for Copilot

For AI to become more useful at work, it needs access to appropriate business context.

Microsoft says Copilot is grounded in Microsoft IQ, its intelligence platform for enterprise AI across the Microsoft stack.

Microsoft is expanding the business context available to Copilot through sources including Fabric IQ, Power BI semantic models, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform.

The goal is to allow Copilot and AI agents to work with more relevant organizational information without forcing employees to repeatedly search for data or switch between applications.

Microsoft is also introducing a new plugin registry that brings Microsoft, partner and custom-built plugins into a unified catalog.

IT departments will be able to approve and manage plugins centrally, while developers and partners can extend Copilot across supported experiences.

For organizations, this reinforces an important principle: the quality and governance of business data will increasingly influence the value they receive from AI.

FinOps for AI: Managing Microsoft Copilot and AI Agent Costs

More capable AI agents also introduce another consideration: cost management.

Microsoft is expanding its FinOps for AI capabilities to help organizations manage AI spending and understand the value generated by Copilot and agents.

Microsoft distinguishes between everyday Copilot interactions and more advanced agentic workloads.

A user subscription license supports everyday AI activities such as quick answers, first drafts, summaries and analysis, along with Copilot across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.

More advanced agentic capabilities, including Cowork, Code and Autopilot, use usage-based billing.

Microsoft is introducing additional tools that can help administrators manage spending policies, control available model families, understand AI usage and determine where AI investment is producing useful outcomes.

This means Microsoft Copilot adoption is increasingly more than a software licensing decision.

Organizations need to consider AI governance, usage, security, adoption and financial management together.

What Does the New Microsoft Copilot Mean for Businesses?

Microsoft’s September 2026 announcement signals a broader transition.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is evolving from an AI assistant toward a more comprehensive AI-powered work environment.

Employees will increasingly be able to:

Ask Copilot for information.

Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Delegate complex work.

Build applications and workflows.

Automate recurring processes.

Collaborate with AI agents.

Act on organizational knowledge within Microsoft 365.

For businesses, however, access to advanced AI capabilities does not automatically translate into business value.

Organizations still need the right Microsoft 365 environment, data structure, permissions, governance, licensing strategy, security controls and employee adoption plan.

Those foundations become even more important as AI gains access to additional organizational information and becomes capable of completing more actions.

How Should Organizations Prepare for the Next Generation of Microsoft 365 Copilot?

Organizations considering Microsoft Copilot for business should start by identifying where AI can create meaningful improvements in existing workflows rather than deploying AI without a clear objective.

A Copilot readiness review may include:

  • Microsoft 365 licensing
  • Microsoft Copilot licensing
  • Copilot readiness
  • SharePoint and OneDrive information architecture
  • Data accessibility
  • User permissions
  • Microsoft 365 security
  • AI governance
  • Employee use cases
  • AI agent opportunities
  • Workflow automation
  • Training and adoption
  • AI cost management

The objective should not simply be to deploy AI.

It should be to determine where AI can reduce repetitive work, improve access to organizational knowledge, support employees, and create measurable business value.
